Shifting Perspectives

The Body Hears What the Mind Says

Transforming Pain Perception Through Mindset

Did you know that your internal dialogue plays a pivotal role in how you perceive pain and navigate recovery? Our mindset can either hinder or enhance our ability to achieve peak performance and well-being. The difference between a fixed mindset—believing outcomes are beyond our control—and a growth mindset—believing we can influence our outcomes—can profoundly shape our experiences and potential.

Identifying Limiting Beliefs

Consider the stories you tell yourself. Are they empowering or limiting? Ask yourself, “Am I telling myself I can, or am I telling myself I can’t?”

Common fixed mindset narratives include:

  • What’s wrong with me?
  • Why does my body hurt?
  • I could never do that.
  • I’m too old.
  • It runs in my family.
  • I don’t like exercising.
  • I can’t do that because I hurt my back.
  • I’m too heavy.

These thoughts may feel familiar, but would you speak to a friend this way? If not, why treat yourself with less kindness?

Shifting the Narrative

The stories we repeat about our pain, mobility, and abilities easily become our reality. But the opposite is also true: adopting a growth mindset can reshape our perception and experiences. By being kinder to ourselves and reframing our narratives, we can shift from a victim mindset to one of empowerment.

Practicing Positive Self-Talk

Begin by noticing the small victories and positive aspects of your day. This practice can help cultivate a growth mindset. Here are some examples:

  • I’m doing my best with the information I have.
  • Today, my left knee didn’t hurt.
  • I can’t do that—yet.
  • Learning is a process; I’ve succeeded before.
  • My body supports me on my journey.
  • Play is exercise, and the child in me loves to play.
  • I have five minutes, which is enough time to [insert small activity].
  • My injury does not define me.
  • I am the best [fill in the blank], just as my best friend would say.

By focusing on these positive statements, you can create a new truth for yourself—one built on resilience and optimism.

Embracing Small Wins

Remember, success isn’t a sudden leap but a series of small, consistent wins. By changing the narrative we tell ourselves, we can reshape our reality and move closer to a life of empowered, active living.
